May 15, 2015

This is my FAVORITE TIME OF YEAR - SYTTENDE MAI!!!! What is that you ask??? It means, 17th of May in Norwegian. This is significant because, this is the HUGE festival celebrating Syttende Mai in Stoughton, WI. Syttende Mai (17th of May) is the Norwegian CONSTITUTION day. "The Constitution of Norway was signed on 17th May 1814 at Eidsvoll and as per the constitution Norway was declared to be an independent nation. The reality that this CONSTITUTION came in context with a very strong movement in NORWAY for INDEPENDENCE from SWEDEN." -- THIS CONCLUDES YOUR WORLD HISTORY LESSON OF THE DAY!!!! So anyway -- why does it mean so much to me??? Well, there are several reasons. I was born and lived just north of Stoughton in Madison. My husband had a family cottage in Stoughton. This cottage was built by my husband's father and grandfather. We spent a considerable amount of time at the cottage. Our children grew their and in the lake in the summers. We ALWAYS attended the Syttende Mai festival every year. Then for four years, I participated in the run/walk (17 miles) from Madison to Stoughton. I LOVED this!!! It was really hard work and this is when I first noticed symptoms of my Multiple Sclerosis (M.S.)! I did not understand at the time and neither did my doctor. M.S. can be misdiagnosed for years and that is EXACTLY what happened to me. After I was diagnosed with M.S., my body really fell apart. I had a HORRIBLE time walking. I had to use either a walker or cane to get around. It was a very rough few years (understatement). I longed to get back to a point just to walk that kind of distance. My children knew how much it meant to me and how much it hurt my heart not to participate. So they did the 17 mile race, Jeremy did one year and Elyse did 2 or 3 years. In the meanwhile, I was working on my nutrition and exercise. I was actually getting better and stronger. I achieved being able to run the 10 mile RUN - 3 YEARS IN A ROW. Last year, was pretty much a disaster!!!! Yes, I did run the 10 miles without question. But at the same time my M.S. was really working on my body. It had deteriorated and weakened my left hip and ankle muscles. I ended up with MULTIPLE TEARS IN MY LIGAMENT IN MY LEFT ANKLE. (This has always been my weaker side.) I still ran the 10 mile run last year and finished running on Memorial Day with a 5K in Pecatonica. Since, then I had STOPPED running on the advice from the doctors and physical therapist. They wanted me to allow the tears to heal. I started running again this spring. The whole time, I was noticing that my left foot/ankle seemed to be falling outward. So my ankle bone is moving closer to the floor instead of nice and erect like my right ankle. I went to my Neuro doc and asked for maybe needing a brace for this ankle. He sent me to the Orthopedic Rehab. Now my diagnosis is that I am developing a club foot and need surgery to correct this. GREAT!!!! I have been dealing with this SHIT (YES - I said, "SHIT") for 1 1/2 YEARS... I have been going to Drs and try to be proactive with my health issues. Then I had another HUGE WHAMMY from my monster - MS!!!! I became ill with an UTI (Urinary Tract Infection). Since, the MS has deadened some of my nerves - I NEVER HAD A CLUE. So I did not have any of the obvious symptoms - ie burning upon urination. Yes, it sometimes took me longer to urinate but.. that is not an uncommon issue with folks with MS... You deal with it and get over that... Well, one morning the UTI decided it was not getting any attention so, it decided to FUCK with my M.S.. I was LITERALLY at the gym, doing my usual early morning workout. I had ran, done pushups, planks, etc.... Then all of the sudden it felt like I had a REALLY BAD "charlie horse" in my legs. Plus, I had a very strong, urgent feeling to defecate. I crawled and held on to wall to get to the bathroom. I was a bit late. So I cleaned myself up and was hurting so horribly from this "charlie horse" feeling. I thought maybe the warm water in the shower would help to calm down the nerves. As I was getting undressed, I realized that my stability was deteriorating more and more. So the thought of wet flooring and being less and less able to stand unassisted was probably not a good idea. So, I got back dressed and just sat still for awhile and tried to do some breathing exercises to calm myself. As the story goes, I ended up calling my daughter to assist me and ended up in the hospital. My mobility and neuropathy has been HORRIBLE, and this is saying it mildly. I have not been able to run. I have tried but, there is NO WAY. I have really been focusing on my Pilates during my early morning exercises. This week, I have really noticed a break through. My walking ability has really improved. Also, my overall strength and stamina has improved. Last night, I was teaching Pilates - and noticed - WOW - I was really plowing through some of the more advanced moves. I WAS SO EXCITED!!!! This made me plow through more and longer Pilates holds... I was just ripping through 1 minute planks like it was nothing. The students were pretty toasted by the time I was done... This is the first REAL ENCOURAGEMENT I have experienced from my body. I am still not able to run but, MAYBE by Memorial Day -- who knows... Right now, I am focused on my biking. Tomorrow, I am off as an OFFICIAL FOR THE SYTTENDE MAI 10-MILE RUN. How many miles I will actually do, we will find out. So YES - the MS Monster has been really working on FUCKING with me.... But, I am DETERMINED AND VOW - NOT TO ALLOW IT TO TAKE ME DOWN EASY. It messing with one EXTREMELY STUBBORN AND MEAN IRISH GIRL!!! SO YES -- TO HELL WITH THE MS!!!! I REFUSE to let it inhale me... I will always fight and work my damnedest!!!! So YES --- FOREVER FORWARD!!!!

April, 17, 2015

Yes, a picture saids a thousand words... You guess it, I'm in the hospital due to the DAMN FUCKING MS!!!! So here's my story... I have on the whole been doing OK.. Still have issues with my running.. but I 'm in run club and run/walking about 3+ miles... I have also been working on my biking. I am trying to get ready for biking the Syttendi Mai run. So I will be biking a mininum of 20 miles over from Madison to Stoughton. Yesterday, all Hell broke lose... I was at the gym at my wee hours in the morning... I have been working on the various challenge exercises that have been laid out by my friend Laura... I just finished my second round of week 4 & 5 when all the sudden I felt like I had a VERY INTENSE feeling in both my legs. It was like a VERY INTENSE Charlie Horse. It literaly dropped me to the ground. I also had a very strong urge to poo. I crawled and hung to the walls to get to the bathroom. I was unsuccessful in achieving the goal... DAMN MS!!! My legs were still in hyper-spasm. I cleaned myself up the best I could and crawled over the shower. I was thinking that maybe a shower would help the spasms to calm down. I tried to take off my clothes but I realized that standing in the wet shower floor would probably be a disaster. So I put my workout clothes back on... After a short bit, my gym buddy, Velda, came in the locker room looking for me... I explained the situation and asked her to get my phone from my car. I called my daughter and told her the situation. She came and by that time I could not even stand up on my own. It was REALLY FRIGHTENING!!!!! She did not even feel confident that she could help me to the car. So we called Pec Ambulance to help walk me to the car. I will not ALLOW THEM to take me in the ambulance after my horror from my one and ONLY encounter with their services.(Another long story...) Elyse then asked which hospital to go to. I thought Swedes in Rockford since that is where my primary DR resides. That was not the wisest choice... There was a total of 2 of us in the waiting room... I waited for HOURS... Finally they put me in a room with a guy with active pneumonia who was not responding to his treatment. So he is hacking a lung... Elyse and I saw masks laying on the counter.. she grabbed them for us... We asked to be moved they said they could not do that,... Finally we moved to another private room in the ER... and waited and waited... It was forever... about 3 hours+. Elyse went to get something for lunch and ran into a DR, he asked what she was doing there. The amazing thing is shortly after she saw him the DR showed up in my room... HMMM... My legs where still really bad.... They had pulled a blood draw from me... and said that I had a UTI... surprise... I had no clue... so I got IV antibodtics for that... Then I got moved to a regular floor. They did not want to discharge me since I was unable to walk on my own. In the mean time, I called my neuro at UW and told him the situation. When I was in the room I saw their Neuro... He asked me about how many MRI scans that I have had. I told him I only had scans at my initial DX. He proceeded to say some things that I felt was very unprofessional about my neuro. That did not sit well with me... I ended up having brain and full spine MRI. Last night the pain was HORRIBLY intense in my legs. At first I recieved only a Tylenol.. It did not do a thing... I then asked for something stronger, which I recieved. That helped so I could at least sleep for a solid 4 interupted hours. Now I'm currently still in the hospital. They are waiting the MRI results before giving me any more steriods. I am still getting the IV antibotics for the UTI. The other very disappointing thing is that I missed the first day of our bike club. I have worked so hard with my other cohorts to get this started. There was a good group that showed up about 20 people... I was THRILLED!!! I can't wait till next week.. I'll be there in all my glory. So as always I will continue moving forward.. ALWAYS AND FOREVER FORWARD!!!!!

March 26, 2015

It has been quite awhile since I have written. It has been a VERY CHALLENGING YEAR!!! The DAMN MS has a powerful grip even with all my efforts. It still knows and does attack in the most vicous and unforgiving way... So my runnng last year was minimal. It was all due to the torn tendons in my left ankle. My last REAL run was for the Pec Library - Memorial Day 5K. Then I was doing an eminse amount of physical therapy. The PT was GREAT and actually understood MS. It is AMAZING how many health professionals do not get the various aspects and quirks of MS. We worked on strengthening my left hip and ankle, One thing, I was able to do without causing greater injury was biking. So, I bought myself my FIRST 21-speed bicycle. I called it my "big girl bike". I did a few organized bike tours. My longest ride was 66 miles!!! I really loved it!!!! Plus, over the winter I had to have a round of the YUCKY steriods. It was not due to the MS. It was some weird allergy. We still have no clue of what caused it. I was broken out EVERYWHERE!!!! I REALLY mean EVERYWHERE. So a good month of that horrible stuff. Yes, it did take care of the hives but it also left me with an extra 20lbs!!!! DAMN!!!! I did keep with ALL my regular exercise, indoors. I have even progressed with my Pilates to the point that I am teaching it at Summit Fitness. I have been substituting for my friend,Laura, but now I am a PAID instructor!!! I plan on getting certified in Pilates this winter. Right now, I have too many things keeping me VERY BUSY!! I am still working full time. Plus, spending as much time as possible with my little grandsons!!! The other thing I have started with a couple other folks is a BIKE CLUB in town. We are planning on starting on April 16th!!!! I am REALLY excited about that!!! I am still a member and believe it or not a leader of the RUN CLUB. I am going to lead the beginner group with a couple other people. To think, IN LESS THAN ONE YEAR... I was running 12 miles at a time now to a walk/run status. It is VERY frustrating! I try to keep with my mantra -- ALWAYS FORWARD!!!! I am going to do short runs now. Plus, my biking I can go as far as I want. I AM NOT ALLOWING THE MS TO TAKE MORE FROM ME!!!! I have set my goals for this year. They include: a triathalon and to bike to Madison, WI and back. I also plan on doing some bike tours. In fact, I am helping to organize a bike tour in Pecatonica on Memorial Day weekend. My usual first big run for Syttende Mai in Stoughton,WI will be different this year. Since, I cannot run it. I have contacted the organizers and told them I want to volunteer to bike the route and monitor the safety of the runners. This way I am still involved with an event I TRULY love!!!! I am not sure if I am biking the 20 or 10 mile runners. Either way, I am going to be putting on some decent miles and getting a workout. So as you see, even though the DAMN MS has tried its damnest to knock me down. I have picked myself up and going about things in a different route. As for my ankle situation, even with my continuing the PT exercises (3X/week), the alignment of the ankle and leg is getting worse. It is getting to the point, that I am feeling it in my joints. I had an appointment with my neurologist at the MS Clinic this week and that was one of our discussion points. He is having me go to the Ortho/Rehab to see about getting a brace for my ankle. I have been wearing when running a soft brace recommended by the PT and the podiatrist. But that is not doing the trick. The muscles in the ankle are rotating outward. So of course, I am feeling pressure in my knee and hip. This is NOT COOL!!! DAMN, FUCKING MS!!!!! So if getting a brace to help/keep alignment then so be it.... My joints are way too damn precious!!!! That appointment has already been set and in April sometime. Till then, I will wear the soft brace when I run or long bike rides!!! As for the rest of my LOVELY (ironic... smirk) symptoms, I have been having same amount of numbness in legs, arms, and face. My urinary issues have been more apparent. My night time frequency/urgency has increased to sometimes 5X per night. So he just prescribed me meds for that. My sleeping pattern is still SHIT!!! I go to bed about 10-11 and the damn legs are moving by 4-5am. So I get up and go to the gym. It is usually quiet there and it is mostly the same group of people. I tend to go off and do my Pilates and various floor exerices without anyone near me. He has offered me countless time something to help with the sleeping issue. I refuse!!! I do not want to be a ZOMBIE because of sleep meds. I am used to my weird sleep pattern. I just want to stop the endless trips to the pottie!!!! It does sometimes upset me that people do not SEE MS always. Therefore, if you are not using a wheelchair or cane or wwhatever that everything is just PEACHY! Well, I can tell you that it is NOT PEACHY.. MS SUCKS!!! So --- here I am still fighting and taking alternate measures to keep moving forward. ALWAYS FORWARD!!!!

July 12, 2014

Well, I have NOT been running this summer due to the tendon tears in my left ankle. This has been caused primarily due to the MS. What has happened is that the MS has affected the muscles not only in my left hip but in my left ankle. We worked on strengthen these muscles but, I still tend to bring my left foot inwards when I walk or run. So the problem is not going to be able to be resolved. As I know, the MS will march forward and continue to attack my muscles. I have done my very best to strengthen my overall muscle tone and progress. But the MS is doing its very best to knock me down. I have been continuing with my biking and have really increased my overall endurance. Believe me --- this whole issue has been MORE THAN FRUSTRATING AND VERY DISHEARTENING. (YES - EXTREME UNDERSTATEMENT!!!) My therapist and I had a very frank talk last Tuesday, even through I have made progress I will never be fully correct with my ankle. The MS is causing the left foot to twist inward. No matter what I do and what exercises I do I cannot force it to stay straight. I can get it straight but, as soon as I fatigue the foot goes back to the inward twist. As one of my good running friends told me, look at what I have accomplished 3-10 mile runs and one 1/2 marathon. We both started running at the same time with no prior running experience. Yes, I have worked VERY, VERY, VERY HARD for these accomplishments. That is not a question but, I don't want the journey to end. The therapist told me that best I can do with my running is short runs, ie 5-K's. Those are nice but, I REALLY enjoy the long runs. But I am getting out and getting in LONG bike rides now. I have really progressed with this sport and truly enjoy it. So maybe this is where I am supposed to go now. I am not giving up by ANY STRETCH!!! I just need to change gears. Right now, I am trying to heal the tendons and will participated in the Stoughton 5K at the end of the month. If I have to walk a good majority of it... so be it. Then maybe if I just cut back on my running and only do the Stoughton 10 mile and the Pecatonica runs in May and then nothing till later in the season. I don't know... All I know is that I have to keep moving forward, that much I know. So as the MS is trying to really mess with me - I will find other avenues to keep moving. So as ALWAYS AND FOREVER --- FORWARD!!!!

June 5, 2014

Yes, soon I will be the Nana of two wonderful grandchildren!! Today, as I'm writing this Kollin is napping in my arms. That is pretty sweet! Well, I have NOT run since the Pec Memorial Day race. I have started seeing the therapist this week. He is the same one I saw before. He put me through a few exercises, ultrasound, and assessments. Told him I was still doing the hip/balance exercises 3X per week. He wants me to continue with those. I told him I plan to be released by the end of July. At that time, I plan to start training for the 1/2 marathon in September. The therapist was not so sure about that or me to continue with running. I was VERY upset! (Understatement). But then I thought look at where I started and NO ONE ever thought I could do what I am doing. So maybe I could get back to it. I am keeping my exercise up and increase my biking mileage. So even with this set back - I am still moving forward. ALWAYS FORWARD!!!!

May 23, 2014

Well, I LIVED through the 10 mile race in Stoughton, WI!!! Yes, tendons are still in tack!!! YEA!!!!! This was my THIRD year of completed that race. I also received my very coveted race shirt. YOU ONLY RECEIVE THIS IF YOU FINISH!!!! So they are really special and worn with GREAT PRIDE AND HONOR~!!! I also saw my best little grandson when I was done. That really made me very happy to have my family there in support!!!!! This race was specially difficult due to the tendon tears. I ran it 100% but, really took a very easy pace. I did not want to push to hard and have those tendons snap. I was already PUSHING THE ENVELOPE TO THE EXTREME!!! With the more relaxed pace, my time was longer. But oh well... I finished and did not snap any tendons. So I am good with that!!!! Now, this weekend I have the Pecatonica Crooked River 5K. That will be my LAST TIME RUNNING FOR THE NEXT 6-8 WEEKS!!! OH -- I am going to die without running!!! But I am going to focus ALL MY OUTDOOR running time to biking. I do have my new "big girl bike" and that is what I am going to do!!! Maybe all this will make me a better distance runner. Who knows... I am trying to think very positive. I was thinking during the last couple of miles of the Syttende Mai race - how this was my VERY LAST LONG RUN for 2 months!!! So I decided to celebrate the run. I was celebrating the whole way of that race. Every person I passed - I would tell them what a great job they were doing and to keep going. I know that the race is very difficult. I don't know what race these people were doing but, it did not matter. There were 3 races going on simultaneously (the 10-mile, 20-mile, and 17-mile walk/run). The weather was PERFECT... It was cooler, a light breeze, and sunny. You could not have asked for anything better. After I got through the race, showered, and off for my prize -- coffee and lefse!!!! The rest of the weekend, I was enjoying every activity that I could!!! It is ALWAYS SO MUCH FUN!!!! This whole week I have really been resting that tendon... NO AEROBIC activity... only Pilates and biking. So hopefully, I can cruise through the 5K race. I will do the same thing... just run... I am NOT GOING TO PUSH IT... just take it easy. Then after the race, breakfast with our running club. That sounds like a pretty wonderful way to start a holiday weekend to me!!!! Remember ALWAYS AND FOREVER - FORWARD!!!!

May 16, 2014

YES, TOMORROW IS THE BIG DAY!!!!!! TOMORROW, SATURDAY, is my 10-mile race in Stoughton, WI. This will be my THIRD - YES T-H-I-R-D time of doing this race. NUMBER ONE --- never in a billion years would I ever have DREAMED back in the early days of my diagnosis of MS would I thought this was even REMOTELY possible. But here I am. Of course, as we know the MS has TOTALLY tried every which way to play on my body to keep me from doing this race. BUT F-U-C-K the MS!!!!! I have been working hard for years - lost over 130lbs and gone from using a cane/walker to running. I will NOT ALLOW THE MS TO TAKE THIS FROM ME! Well, back to my saga that has been going on since before the first of 2014. The wobbly ankle issue.... Yes, the sports med Dr had me go to PT. PT said the wobble was due to the MS weakening my abductor/adductor muscles in my left hip. So he gave me exercises. I (the type A person that I am) - and HATING THE MS WITH MORE INTENSITY THAN EVER - did the damn exercises. I did them SO MUCH that the PT told me to do THEM LESS OFTEN. I promised to ONLY do them 3x per week. Yes - I have been doing that and STILL DOING THEM!!! I have noticed alot of strengthening in my hip and I do not have the wobble in my ankle. So far - sounds WONDERFUL right??!!!! Yes and NO --- well because this issue has been going on for such a long time - damage has occured to my ankle - BIG TIME! I was refered by my family doc to see a podiatrist. I finally got into him after all my MRI tests last week... So he FINALLY gave me the answer. What is the issue??? I have MULTIPLE (key word MULTIPLE) TEARS IN MY TENDON. This is why it hurts so damn bad. I told him I had done my practice running of the route (10 mile) and the week previous of over 13 miles. His response was that he was SHOCKED that I could go that far because the tendon is so bad. He REALLY does not want me to do this race. He told me if it tears then he would have to go in and repair. He also gave me the whole horror story associated with it. I told him - well I am risking it... I AM DOING THE 10 MILE RACE. I guess because if I feel that if I do not - I have let MS have a WIN.... I just CANNOT LIVE WITH THAT!!!! I would rather risk it than have MS have the WIN.... It is hard to explain but, that is the best I can do... I will continue to wear my little brace and take the race very easy and slow. That is how I did the practice race. I really do not care about the time. There is so many other extremely experienced runners that I cannot even touch them. But that is OK... This week I have been resting it. My last run was on Sunday and it was only a few miles... Very easy. We did discuss other exercise I could do that would not cause further damage. I basically cannot do any jumping/jarring type of activity. We discussed swimming (that is great but the weather has to warm up) and also biking. That I did like and will be biking after the Pecatonica 5K race. He wants me to NOT RUN for a MINIMUM OF 6 WEEKS.... DAMN... But- I figure... OK, I will have Syttendi done and the next race I would want is the 1/2 marathon in September. So if I bike all summer then in August I should be released and can start training for the 1/2. So that is my thought process at the moment.
Since biking is going to be my main outdoor aerobic sport this summer. I had been looking at purchasing a new "big girl bike". I only had my son's old 10+ speed bike and my single speed recumbent. The problem with the boy's bike is that it is made for a guy. I do not have the length in my torso so, I am constantly seating on the edge of the seat that ends up being very painful after awhile. The recumbent is great but, not for long distance or any type of speed. So I had been eyeing a bike that I liked. I figured this was my sign to go for it. So I did... I LOVE IT.... It is actually made by Jeep... It is so comfortable (after I changed the seat to one we already had). I can really G-O!!!! This whole week has been rainy just about every day. Tomorrow, it is forcasted to be sunny and cool. OK - that is better than a COLD RAIN. I have done that race --- YEARS ago in cold rain/sleet. That I will NEVER do again. I had NEVER gotten so cold or felt that miserable in my life. Tomorrow I plan to win over the DAMN MS MONSTER.... I will go forward - maybe running quite a bit slower, but still running.... That does not matter. So as ALWAYS AND FOREVER FORWARD!!!! Yes - even had a pedicure to commemorate Syttende Mai. That is the Norwegian flag on my big toe!!! You may wonder what is Syttende Mai -- it means 17th of May. That is Norway's Independence Day. The Constitution of Norway was signed on 17th May 1814 at Eidsvoll and as per the constitution Norway was declared to be an independent nation.

May 7, 2014

Exactly 10 days to the 10-mile Syttende Mai race in Stoughton, WI. I did get to Oregon (where race starts) last Saturday. I ran the full route, never stopping. I just kept a steady slower pace. My main goal is, as always to run it 100% and to stay upright. It took me 2:29 which was much slower than previous years. But then I was not dealing with tendonitis. I STILL have not seen the podiatrist since our first appointment because I have been rescheduled. I did have the MRI done and have read the report from the radiologist. I am supposed to have an appointment this Friday, we will see what he said. I just keep running and eating a lot of ibuprofen. Which is not really a good thing. At least, I know it is not a bone spur. That could be devastating!!!! So far this week, I have run 4 days in a row. I have not done that in a long time. The weather the last few days has been decent. But I continue with my regular active lifestyle. I don't believe in slowing down. I refuse to allow the MS to get the upper hand. This will be my THIRD year of doing this race. That alone is AMAZING!!! I NEVER would have thought -- me with Secondary Progressive MS and NEVER running before could be at this stage. It has been a LONG, LONG climb. Starting at the very pit -- weighing 270 lbs and using a cane/walker only FOUR years ago! I REFUSE to go backwards. I enjoy being active and plan to do my damnest to stay that way!!!! I was hoping to maybe do the 20 mile race this year but, it was not meant to be. Maybe next year, who knows. The one truly AWESOME thing is at the finish line my new grandson should be there. He can see his Nana running hard. Next year, I will have another grandbaby greeting me at the finish line. That is SO VERY EXCITING!!!! Right now, I am hoping for decent weather. I plan to run it easy and steady. So now and always --- forever forward!!!

April 17, 2014

Yes, this picture is real! This was the scene looking out my backyard on Saturday morning. That is NOT SNOW BUT HAIL!!!! Yes, there was really this amount of hail. I was planning on going out in the morning and try to get in a run. I'm VERY GLAD I looked at the forecast prior. It had been looking like rain all morning. Believe it or not, I did get a short run that day late in the afternoon. Sunday was nothing but rain and cold. This is not my year for running. My ankle is still VERY PAINUL!!! (Understatement!). I am doing nothing but eating Ibuprofen and alternate cold packs and moist heat. I really pray that next week this Doctor can fix me!!! This has been HELL!!!! I was hoping to get in a long run this weekend but, I don't know. I have been doing some short runs this week and I have REALLY been hurting. Sometimes - life is a BITCH!!! I know the MS caused the "wobble" in my ankle which caused this issue. Which then in turn, caused this "whatever" with my ankle!!! I may whine and bitch but, I will not ALLOW the MS monster to take me down!!!! It can go right to HELL where it belongs!!!! So right now, I am trying to run what I can. It is hard because, any run I do I pay the price with the aftermath. The pain is getting more intense. I just have to go with the thought that next week I will be getting an answer to this nightmare. That is all I can do!!! In the meantime - ALWAYS FORWARD!!!!

April 11, 2014

Well, the MS is REALLY TRYING to give me the one-two punch to keep me from running. I have been dealing with a "wobbly" ankle since late fall. I have seen a GREAT sports medicine doctor at University of Wisconsin. She sent me to a GREAT physical therapist in Rockford, IL. I have been going and doing his exercises faithfully (VERY FAITHFULLY!!!) That is GREAT!! He has been working on having me strenghten the abductor and adductor muscles in my left hip. The MS has basically (in my kindergarden medical terms - FUCKED WITH THEM)! As we know - EVERYTHING ALWAYS RUNS DOWNHILL... standard fact of life, right? So back to the kindergarden medical terms it has caused my ankle to be unsteady and wobbly. OK - so I have been doing the 25 exercises (many of those are counted as 1. right-side then 2. left-side) for 2 mins each. I was doing these DAILY AND I MEAN EVERY MORNING. I am usually awake at about 4a because the neuropathy and spasms start in on my legs and feet. So I might as well get up and be productive with my time... So anyway, I get up and go over to our little gym and do those LOVELY AND I MEAN LOVELY hip and balance exercises. I have been progressing very well with these exercises and me the type A person I am --- well I have been "dismissed" from physical therapy. But I am to continue the exercises 3X (AND STRICT ORDERS OF ONLY 3X PER WEEK)!!! So - OK! That is exactly what I have done. This last weekend the weather was actually decent. It has been SO VERY LONG since we have had that. I was outside running as quick as this little MS body could move. Saturday I did a shorter run of only 7.45 miles. I really felt pretty good. On Sunday, the weather was GREAT!!! I ended up running 12.49 miles. I really kind of wanted to go farther but was pooping out the last few miles. Oh, well. Afterwards, I was tired (expected), my feet were burning (expected - due to MS neuropathy), and my left ankle hurting. All week the pain in my ankle has been intense. We started our Run Club on Monday and I could not even run. That says ALOT for me!!! I did call the therapist on Tuesday. He told me to put ice packs on it and brace it. Also to let him know next week how it was feeling. I also informed him of my forecasted running schedule. I did do ONE very short run on Wednesday and the ankle did hurt afterwards. Finally, today (Friday) the pain is better. But, it almost feels like I have a pebble at the bottom of my ankle bone. It is very odd. So I did go and see my primary Doc today. He is sending me to a podiatrist. I see him in about a week and a half. My doc says that, he thinks it could be a bone spur or something tendon related. He told me to continue having it braced and put cold compresses after workouts and moist heat after workouts/runs. Otherwise, to take Ibuprofen for the pain. So as of the moment, I am not starting the running season on a high note. It is frustrating to say it lightly. But, I will bitch and whine, of course... Also - I will continue my fight.... Did the MS cause this issue - don't know... Really, until we find out what it is - no one knows... So YES - right now - I am a bit bummed... but I will continue YES -- and ALWAYS AND FOREVER FORWARD!!!!!

March 5, 2014

The weather still has not been very cooperative for running outside. We are STILL getting snow/ice!!! My last outside run was over 2 weeks ago. Plus, I have been dealing with this wobbly ankle every time I run. I did finally get to see the sports medicine doctor at University of Wisconsin a week ago. The place was amazing! I even had to run the track there so she could see me run. I was put through all the diagnostic paces including full xrays and MRI. She did witness the wobbling ankle and agreed with me it was MS related. She also applauded me for seeking attention to this before something bad happened, like stepping down wrong and snapping the ankle. If that happens it is VERY likely I am done running and affect my overall mobility! She could only find that I did have a small bone spur. She asked me if I felt it, I laughed because I am very numb in my feet and legs. She recommended a physical therapist in Rockford that she has worked with and highly recommended. I was thrilled to be able to get an appointment with him the next week. I saw him on Tuesday and he had me pegged QUICK! He saw the ankle issue and my spasticity with my leg. He concluded that my issue is stemming from my hip. I know that my hip flexors are extremely tight. We do some hip flexor exercises in Pilate's and every time I am about in tears. YES, IT HURTS THAT BAD!!!! But, I do the exercises because I realize that muscle is VERY tight and needs to be worked. He gave me a series of exercises to do. Did it hurt... YES is an understatement!!! But, I forged through! The other great thing about this therapist is that he is a runner. I asked him about signing up for my May race in Stoughton, WI. I had not decided whether to sign up for the 10 or 20 mile race. He advised me to sign up for the 10. This is due a couple of factors; weather conditions of not getting outside to really train and the wobbling ankle. So now, I have a series of hip strengthening exercises to do on a daily basis. I completed them this morning and did my regular Tabata type exercises. I will tell you for someone who is generally numb and does not feel muscle soreness. I can feel free this!!! My hips and butt have been sore all day. But that is good, it is showing those muscles who is BOSS!!! It is ME, not the DAMN MS!!! I will continue working through these exercises EVERY day. Because it is not just running but this has to do with my overall mobility! I will NOT ALLOW THE MS to WIN!!! Not without a DAMN good FIGHT!! It is not going to happen!!!! So I just keep fighting and as ALWAYS and FOREVER FORWARD!!!

Febuary 28, 2014

I know it has been quite awhile since my last post. Most of it has to do with the HORRIBLE winter we have had. Getting out and running has been next to impossible. We have had more snow and EXTREME COLD this year than in DECADES!!!! The other obstacle has been the DAMN MS!!!!! I have been having a horrible time of keeping my left (weaker side) ankle steady while running. What happens is specially when I get fatigued - the ankle wobbles from the time I pick it up to set it down on the pavement. Now this is VERY SERIOUS!!!! Because - I may set that foot down at a wrong angle that could snap the ankle!!! I did purchase a really good soft brace that I have been wearing to try to keep the ankle from wobbling. It has helped quite a bit. I also contacted my MS doctor and told him the situation. I also explained that I wanted to see a sports medicine doctor to help me with this situation. He agreed and I did visit the sports medicine doctor this week. She put me through my paces... (Which is fine....) Now mind you before I drove an hour to Madison, WI --- I did one of my friends hardest workout that she has put together yet... So I get to the UW facility... and WOW!!!!! It is a new building (huge) with a state of the art gym and HUGE ASS track... The Dr runs tests on me including X-rays and MRI of my ankle. NEXT - she wants to see me run. I am thinking - "I'm tired from Laura's killer workout but why not..." So I run the track as the Dr follows me in a segway. I run it once - she asks if I would do it AGAIN! I thought I was going to die right there!!!! But I'm like "what the hell - if I die I am at least in my hometown". So I did it. I go back to the exam room and she tells me that there is nothing physically wrong with my ankle. She believes that the wobbling (which she witnessed) is due to muscle weakness from the MS. She also applaudes me for being in tune to my body and recognizing an issue BEFORE there is an EXTREME SERIOUS ISSUE (breaking the ankle)! So now what do I do... She advising me to go to a sports medicine physical therapist. She evens knows and highly recommends one in Rockford. So now I have an appointment this Tuesday with this PT. I have not signed up for ANY races yet, all because of this ankle issue. The other factor is the DAMN weather that has not allowed me to do any REAL distance. So I do not really feel comfortable in signing up for my Syttende Mai race yet. I will definately do the 10 miler but, would like to try the 20. It would be a GREAT pre-cursor for doing the full marathon (26.2 miles) in September. Believe me, I do workout all the time and workout HARD!!!! But I also know when I need to pull back and right now I am in a bit of a quandry. Hopefully, within the next week or two I will know what I can sign up for in May. Even this weekend of running, the weather S-U-C-K-S!!!!! The forcasted HIGH is predicted to be 10 degrees with snow... GREAT!!! So it sounds like "inside play days" for me. I just keep going with all my cross training. I really cannot do much more. It is very frustrating! But I will get past it... I will move forward... I have no doubt about that. The DAMN MS has to try and throw me that nasty curve every now and again. What fun would there be if it didn't! Life with MS would be WAY TO BORING, otherwise!!!!! So -- yes -- I'm still and ALWAYS - FORWARD!!!!!!

January 17, 2014

The holidays are over and it is back to the normal routine. Christmas holiday was GREAT! As you see, we got to spend some time with our new grandson. He is just WONDERFUL! As for the rest, we were able to spend time with my daughter's family. My son and new wife were in Colorado. We did talk on the phone but, it is not the same as him being here. I do miss him but, he is a Marine and that is what dictates his time. I do cherish the time when he is here. As for my running, it has not been so good. I have gotten outside and ran a few times. But this winter we have had ALOT of snow, ice, and extreme cold. I did get out for a short run last weekend. That was WONDERFUL! Anytime, that I can get out there I truly relish! Spring will be coming, I just have to keep that in mind. Also, this EXTREME cold has really been messing with my MS symptoms. The cold REALLY causes me tremendous pain in my legs/hands. Plus, I feel very exhausted. I feel like I am constantly battling trying to keep up with my exercise/running but at the same time -- I just want to crawl into a hole and deal with nothing and no one. I know that sounds SO HORRIBLE and very SELFISH. But that is what that MS fatigue monster is like... It is a TRUE AND UTTER BITCH!!!! I sometimes think that is one of the worse MS symptoms is the fatigue. It is really hard for people to understand how the fatigue monster affects people with MS. It is not just being "tired". It is SO MUCH MORE than that!!!! You do NOT want to anything to do with anyone or anything. I personally get EXTREMELY QUIET when the fatigue monster hits me. One of the reasons is that, talking will actually use up some of my very precious energy. This may be energy I am using to exercise or to do some task. Seriously, it is THAT INTENSE. I do get through the fatigue spells. They last for awhile -- I bitch and whine... but after about a week or so they go away. They just are always lurking and you never know when they are going to raise their ugly heads and over come you. There is nothing you can do about it. I do have to say that, believe it or not, my fatigue issues are MUCH BETTER than they used to be. The nutrition, exercise, mind-set all have caused it to greatly improve. I know that the winter and the lack of the wonderful sunshine also plays on me big time. To be in so much darkness and cold is hard. I just tell myself -- SPRING IS COMING, SPRING IS COMING.... Soon it will be warmer and no more ice on the pavement. I have gotten over to the indoor track at a neighboring high school a few times. It is really nice to have that option. I try to get down there on the weekends when I can and it is available. Otherwise, I am outside. Last weekend, I got out on Sunday and got in a few miles. So all I can do is keep trying and fighting. Many people would say, well if your MS fatigue is so bad you should stay home and rest. They don't understand - I CANNOT!!! That would be giving into the MS BITCH!!! NO - I have to fight... So even going and working out for an hour or so is at least keeping those muscles tone. So as ALWAYS AND FOREVER FORWARD!!!

December 12, 2013

It has been awhile since I have written... Some is due to the winter weather and not really being able to get outside and run, second is due to various events with the holidays approaching... So much to do... gifts to buy and send off; gifts to finish making; plus need to start my holiday baking.... Plus, this last weekend -- I was pretty involved in processing TWO (yes TWO) deer that my son-in-law shot.... Plus, with the EXTREME COLD it was not easy or quick.... It took ALOT of upper body strength to get the skin off. Now we are working on converting the meat to various cuts... i.e.... steaks, roasts, ground meat, and sausages.... So that keeps a body really busy!!!! Plus, it has been HORRIBLY COLD here... I mean in the negative temps.... So my neuropathy/spasticity with my MS has been in FULL SWING!!!!! For me the damage to the nerves... It is like... image having a tooth with the nerves exposed - then drinking something very cold. It probably sends you right up to the rafters. Well, that is how it feels to me in my feet, legs, and hands. With MS - you do not have the coating on your nerves, so they are basically exposed or raw... That means that every EXTREME TEMP causes me a lot of issues. With the cold - we are talking TRUE PAIN that is very INTENSE!!!! This is an understatement .. when you are off crying because you are in SO MUCH PAIN... It is not good.. Plus, the intense pain is wearing on me, I mean REALLY EXHAUSTING!!!! Now taking my energy, that is sometimes very limited add this to dealing with the cold and it is not a good combo. All I can do is bare with it and PRAY the cold snap breaks SOON!!!! This weekend, I am hoping to be able to get over to the indoor track. I really need some serious run time in, even if it is just going around in a big oval... I am VERY, VERY glad my friend told me about the track. WOW!!!! Especially, with this winter we are having so far.. I would really be screwed out of any run time. I do SO MISS being outside and running out in the countryside or even in town. Right now, even if it was warmer I could not run out of town due to deer hunting season. Yes, I wear my LOVELY road construction worker vest - but still a bullet is a bullet and I cannot out run that!!!! I am much more afraid of that than any animals! Inside, I have PLENTY to keep me occupied. I have all my Christmas projects. I did start a HUGE project in January for my daughter and husband - but I will NOT BE ABLE TO COMPLETE. This is the FIRST time I have not completed a project in time. Oh well, it is a HUGE (California King - white on white quilt - done ALL by hand). I did get all the presents for Kollin made... That was fun!!! I haven't made anything for a little one in a LONG time!!! That did eat some of my sewing time. I hope to have the white on white quilt done for next Christmas. Plus, with TWO new family members - I HAD to have Christmas stockings for them. They both turned out great, in my humble opinion - one for my new daughter and grandson... With the Christmas holiday coming up - I really hope I can get in some GOOD run time! Even if it is inside. I don't care. Right now, I am thinking that I would LOVE to increase my mileage to get up to the marathon status by fall 2014. I don't know. The same race I did this year - they are going to do a full marathon and a half. It was a nice race. I LOVED running around the lake. The nice thing about that race is that it is in the area of Madison that I lived. Also it is at a GREAT time of year - September - not to hot or cold. Madison, WI marathon is the first part of November. If it was like this year - that day was HORRIBLE cold. The last race I did was on Thanksgiving day - it was a nice 5k in Freeport. You payment to get in the race was some canned goods for the food pantry. I thought that was GREAT!!! It was a tough race due to the fact that there was snow/ice on the pavement. Since I am not the steadiest and cannot feel or compensate well with my numb feet - it was really tough. But I did the race. Not any great time but, I enjoyed it. It was the first time they had done it and they were very impressed about the turn out. I even got a t-shirt -- that I totally did not expect. The REALLY WONDERFUL thing at this race was this man. Yes, he did the ENTIRE 5K on one leg with crutches. I know that I have my issues running with my MS -- but this man BLEW MY MIND! The determination of this gentleman was so inspiring to me!!!! It just goes to show you - with determination and the right mind-set what can be accomplished. So as ALWAYS AND FOREVER -- FORWARD!!!!

November 18, 2013

I completed the Winnebago IL 8k Turkey Trot on Saturday in 59:21. The weather was MUCH better than last year. It was raining (a cold rain) prior to the race and after the race it really came down hard. I was really ready to bag this race but, my friend Renae talked me into it. It was only fair since, I had talked her into to signing up for the race in the beginning. We even had a GREAT turnout for the race from the Pecatonica crowd!!! That was really nice!!!! I ran the race with my usual pacing being cautious of the wet pavement and any debris/leaves on the roadway. That can be very dangerous and cause me to fall. So I just made sure I stayed in my groove. About halfway the wind was picking up and it did start misting... I was seeing visions of last year's race with the lightening and hail. So I did pick up my pace a bit. But it never did anything more than a fine mist. Soon after the race, the skies broke loose and it really came down. It was REALLY nice to have such a large Pecatonica group at the race!!!! It has been hard to get outside and run because of the nasty weather we have been having. That is the way this time of year is. It is very precarious. I have tried to get out on the weekends as much as possible. Yesterday, I did go and sign up at Byron High School to run the track. It is not too far away and it is an alternative for the winter than just doing the machines. That way I can at least get some distance in even though I am just going around and around (yes, becoming a hamster). I might be looking at doing one more race.... another Turkey Trot 5K in Freeport on Thanksgiving morning. This is a benefit for the food pantry. This is TOTALLY depending on the weather. If it is not good weather - definitely NOT doing this. Otherwise, this is the time I year that I start cracking the whip on my Christmas sewing projects. I have one fairly well completed and LOTS MORE to do.... The weather also keeps me inside more so it actually helps to force me to work inside. I do a lot of sewing. It is actually a two-fold benefit. With MS, one issue (of many) is the numbness of your extremities. So my hands and feet are CONSTANTLY numb and they get very stiff. The sewing helps to keep my hands/fingers nimble. So it is very good muscular exercise for my hands. I sometimes have quite a bit of issues with my hands and small motor movements. One time, I went to vote. As you know, you have to sign when you go there. The official looked at my signature and compared it to the one on file. TOTALLY DIFFERENT!!!!! The official was ACTUALLY NOT going to let me vote. Even though I had picture ID, etc... The only thing that saved me was the wonder of a small town - a couple of the other officials there knew me and could vouch for who I was. Those are some of the weird but, true issues that people with MS have to deal with on a constant basis. Sometimes, you never know when your body is going to head you in a different direction. You have to roll with it.... That is why I keep running.... I am working on keeping my mobility as long as possible. Maybe I will have it forever, maybe not... But I am going to keep working at it. I have noticed that this year, my race times have slowed down. But I am still running. The other positive thing is that I am running longer distances. That is really where I am trying to focus my training. So as ALWAYS AND FOREVER --- FORWARD!!!!

October 18, 2013

I realize how precious everyday that I can celebrate the fact that I can overcome my MS!!! I rejoice when I take off running.... I love when I can get in a good LONG run. It shows me and the MS that I AM IN CONTROL!!!! I do know and truly understand that someday I may not have the control over this HORRIBLE disease... but right now, I seem to for the most part. I am still working on my distance running. Last weekend I set out and ran our Pecatonica Prairie Path, that is fairly flat. I did get in 12.72 mile run on Sunday. So that was GREAT!!! I need more of those longer distance runs to build towards that full marathon. This week I have been taking it easy. The weather has been less than cooperative for running outside. So, my distances have been very short or just working out inside. I have been doing more Pilate's these last few weeks. The reason being, one that my buddy, Laura, has been on vacation and I have been substituting for her; two - the lousy weather outside; and three it really helps me with my spasticity and balance issues. I think many people see people doing Pilate's and because of the slow controlled movements think that it is an easy exercise. WRONG - it is FAR FROM THAT!!!!! Not only is it crucial for a good stable core, balance, flexibility, muscle toning, strengthens bones, etc... Truly not kidding.... MS attacks and works on destroying all of these. So that is why, Pilates is so wonderful for people with MS and other neuromuscular diseases. Yes, I still fall occasionally. But, believe me it A LOT LESS!!! I can even stand on one foot without holding on to anything. Believe me, when I started Pilates there was NO WAY. I had to hold something to stabilize me. Now, I can actually not only stand on one foot but stand on my toes on one foot. Believe me - this is amazing!!!! So this is so crucial for everyday life, not just running. It has helped with my core and overall balance. That is something that MS is very good at trying to destroy! So this is why I sing the praises of Pilates!!! I do wish more people would see its overall benefits. This weekend I have a race, a 10K in Sycamore IL. I did this race last year. It is a fun race and in conjunction with their Pumpkin Festival. There is a large crowd that signs up for this race, I would say over 500 people. Some of the people are even dressed in Halloween costumes. When I run, I tend to heat up very quickly so I really do not like having anything binding or obtrusive on me. I am happiest with a tank top and shorts. The weather is getting cooler whether I will be able to wear that or not we will see. Right now, the forecast is that it is to be sunny and cool (about 40-50 degrees). For me, the cooler weather is the BEST to run in. I am ALWAYS able to go farther and quicker. Since my nerves are damaged and basically exposed - to run in the heat or too cold - is a real struggle and extremely painful. Imagine having a nerve exposed with your teeth, now drink something with ice. Most people would be in terrible pain - some for me. Except that it is not just one little nerve on one tooth, it is usually my ENTIRE LEGS AND FEET that feel the effects. Sometimes (let's get real) even my hands. I am considering one more race before the end of the year, a 8K Turkey Trot in Winnebago (neighboring town). It is a nice race and close by. Otherwise, as ALWAYS AND FOREVER --- FORWARD!!!!

October 4, 2013

YES -- I DID IT!!!! I completed and ran the Garden Half Marathon in Madison, Wisconsin on Saturday, September 28, 2013 (that is 13.1 miles), 100% no walking, without falling, and I was not last!!!!! My time was a respectable 2hrs and 40mins. I took one bathroom break but that was it. This is a HUGE accomplishment for me. Not only am I 53 years old but I have Secondary Progressive MS. What does that mean? It means that I experience various neurological symptoms, pain, spasms -- ALL THE TIME -- 24/7. It never goes away. I have had to learn HOW to run with MS. Why do I say that... imagine trying to run with a swim flipper on one foot, AND a very tight spank around your midriff and left leg, the feeling that your shoes are two sizes to small, your vision will blur now and again, your feet and legs are totally numb, AND you are using every bit of energy and concentration just to keep sequence of picking up one foot, move it forward, and repeating. THIS IS MY REALITY!!!!! Not only in everyday life but, to run is even more challenging. That is why completing this half marathon was SUCH A HUGE TRIUMPH for me!!!! When I arrived at the park early Saturday morning, Big Bird and Cookie Monster were there to send me off on my journey. I was SO EXCITED!!! Who would EVER have imagined that I would be doing this? Believe me - not me nor my doctors! But I did it! Yes, it has taken me YEARS to get to the point of running this distance but, so worthwhile. I am the same person that ONLY 3 1/2 years ago became "cane-free". Yes, before that time I was using a cane and before that I was using a walker at times just to get around. Plus, the neuropathy (nerve pain) was SO intense in my feet that I could not wear regular shoes. Then there is the balance issue... let's just say not good. The ONLY shoes I could wear was Crocs. Plus the factor that I was grossly overweight topping the scales at over 270lbs. How did I get to this point? With ALOT of hard work and support from my wonderful family and friends. Without them - I don't know if I could have done it!!! I did it!!!! When I was first diagnosed in 2006 (but had been experiencing symptoms for about 10 years prior) I started with water aerobics. This did not cause the intense pain in my legs and feet since, I was not putting any weight on them. Plus, the water helped stabilize me. Swimming had ALWAYS been my sport. I was on various swim teams growing up and in college. Running -- NEVER!!! Hated it even when we did it in gym class, now I LOVE it!!! It goes to show you - how you change over the years. Distance running seems to be something that I have mastered. Not only have I learned to read my body but, also to concentrate on my footing and balance. This is not easy. When I am running I am generally looking down. This is because I literally cannot feel the pavement and its imperfections. This is also why I prefer not to run with other people. To have other people around me, takes my focus away on my footing and concentrating on my movement. I enjoy the solitude and I also know that I am NEVER alone. Right now, I am celebrating my VICTORY OVER MS. MS is an unpredictable disease at any point, I may not be able to run or do many of the daily activities. But, TODAY I CAN. I celebrate that fact. What is in my future? Right now, I am working on increasing my distance mileage. The goal is to be able to complete a FULL MARATHON (26.2 MILES) IN 2015. Why, why not!!! I don't believe in allowing MS to beat me. I am going to continue to battle that ugly monster! I will continue my vow -- "ALWAYS FORWARD"!

September 27, 2013

OK --- I'm here in Madison, WI countdown time before the half marathon race tomorrow morning starting at 7:00!!!!! The weather is a bit warmer than it was at our practice run. That may be an issue for me. But I am not going to worry about it. I am just going to enjoy the run!!! Afterwards, it sounds like there is going to be quite a party!!! I want that picture with Big Bird and Cookie Monster. What more could a girl want in this world!!! I am really excited!!! Who would ever EVER thought in a million years that I would be doing this. I am a person that NEVER ran when I was young. Here at 53 years old with SPMS going to run a half marathon --- 13.1 MILES!!!! Yes, the person only a 3 years ago was walking with a cane. The person about 5 years ago could NOT even wear shoes because the neuropathy pain was SO HORIBLE!!! In fact, I walked my first two 5k's in Crocs. The only shoes I could wear!!!! Very very true!!! Now look at me!!! Do I still have neuropathy issues? Yes!!! But they are not as intense as before. Plus, I have learned to blow them off. You just get used to them when you feel it EVERY day!!!! Tomorrow I am going to just enjoy myself!!! For me, the entire run will be a party!! I'm going to be celebrating with EVERY step!!! As I have already proven that I can do this. So now, it is just a matter of doing an 'encore' performance. So JUST enjoy the run and celebrate it!!! Now it is time to rest. The race begins at 7a and I want to be at the park by 6a. So eat and bedtime for this runner. So as ALWAYS and FOREVER FORWARD!!!!

September 19, 2013

http://www.thisisfitworkouts.com/pam-ran-13-miles-oh-and-pam-has-m-s Yes, I lived and COMPLETED the 13.1 miles practice 1/2 marathon run last Saturday!!!! My friend Laura (also trainer, exercise instructor, and my son's former 4th grade teacher) rode her bike as I followed. We did the whole route and I ran it 100%. I did stop for one bathroom break and one minor fall towards the end. But I kept going just nice and steady. I really think Laura was surprised. She asked me when we were about to start, if I plan to walk/run it. I said, NO -- run it 100% at my speed. And that was exactly what I did. It is a beautiful route around Lake Monona in Madison, WI. It was nice having change of scenery along the way. We past gorgeous lake front homes, over the bridge to downtown, saw the beauty of the capital building with the lake in the foreground, Monona Terrace, through parks, etc. I passed all kinds of people; some fishing, some walking dogs, some running, a group of military/veterans running in a group. I said, "Hi!" to all of them. I felt so empowered - that I was ACTUALLY DOING THIS!!!! It was amazing when we got to the bridge and I the GORGEOUS view of the Capitol building and downtown Madison. I was very happy!!! I was born in Madison and it seemed fitting for me to do this HUGE challange here. I was keeping in mind all the years and struggle it has taken me to get to this point. I was also keeping in mind ALL the people with MS that are currently struggling. MS is a struggle (understatement)--- 24/7 - no doubt. But not ALLOWING it to over take you is the key. Yes, I know right now I have accomplished this. Will I be able to do it again, don't know but I am going to give it my damn-ness! I am so blessed to have a great support system of family and friends. It really encourages me and motivates me!!!! The whole run I just locked into my pace and followed Laura as she rode her bike. Just nice and easy! I was getting tired about the 12th mile and did take a very minor tumble. Laura checked me for any big cuts and/or bleeding (since I really very rarely feel sensory pain) and I was OK so off I went. This took all of maybe a minute or two. Afterwards, I walked/paced awhile in the parking lot to get the nerves and muscles calm down. Then I drove to Stoughton for my lefse and coffee breakfast. I was able to sit and enjoy my breakfast/lunch and just relax. Afterwards, believe it or not, I spent the rest of the afternoon shopping and visiting with friends in Stoughton. I felt fine. I just needed my "down time". Now the race is a week away. I am doing shorter runs this week. I don't want to get to over trained and not accomplish the actual race. But I think I am feeling good about everything and being able to handle the distance. Who would have EVER in a million years fathom that I could do this. I know that I did not. Even if you would have said anything about running a 1/2 marathon two years ago - I would have fallen over laughing. ME - 50+ year old, who NEVER ran before, with Secondary Progressive MS... It just goes to show you - that if you dream it and really want it - you can obtain it. What is my secret? It has been YEARS of HARD, HARD WORK; lots and lots of exercise; DRASTIC change of in my nutrition lifestyle to whole foods; drastic weight loss (over 120lbs); and overall improvement of general health. This is not something you do for a few months -- this is a TOTAL LIFESTYLE CHANGE... I am not only one that has experienced drastically improved via this journey - there are others of us out there. But it takes work! I believe in continue to fight the MONSTER OF MS and I will not stop. Now I am focusing on completing this race then,???? The sky is the limit!!!!! REMEMBER, ALWAYS FORWARD~!!!!!!!

September 13, 2013

TOMORROW is going to be a BIG, BIG DAY!!!!! WHY?????!!!! Tomorrow, I am going to practice running the 1/2 marathon route in Madison, WI. My friend, Laura, is going to bike the route ahead of me so that I do not get lost. She will be biking slow because, I am not the fastest runner but that is OK. I do not care about speed, I care about longevity!!! I do wish I would have gotten in more distance practices in - that part does bother me. But this last month, has not been good for that - hot weather, wedding, new grandson... But - oh, well.... I am getting in this practice run in. That will help me so very much! Like I say... I am not going for speed (I cannot do speed). I am just going for endurance - staying upright, run 100%, and finishing (hopefully not last). That is my WHOLE goal!!!!!! I have really worked for this moment.... WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT --- only three years ago I gave up my cane and started running... NOW to do a 1/2 marathon -- that is 13.1 miles -- WOW!!!!!! So definitely keep me in your thoughts tomorrow -- that I accomplish this and live afterwards!!!! I am dedicating this run to my WONDERFUL new additions to my family... #1 that beautiful grandson of mine... #2 my new daughter and son.... I cannot be more blessed!!!! My MS is in a state that is fairly manageable. Yes, I still have issues... lots of issues... I wish I could sleep an entire night through without the DAMN legs seizing and wanting to move all the time and feeling like there is hot ants running up and down them... That is a BITCH!!!! Or the fact that - of the numbness and spasticity in my legs and feet. Of course, this heightens when stressed (like running)... I WILL NOT ALLOW MS TO OVER TAKE ME!!!! DAMN THE SYMPTOMS --- DAMN THE MS RIGHT TO HELL WHERE IT CAME FROM!!!!! I am also very blessed that the EXTREME hot weather has broken... (MS and heat do NOT get along - understatement!!!) So this will be very beneficial to my run!!!!! I have run up to the 13 mile mark but never past it... so this will be a true test. Plus, I have not had that many long runs. I was able to get in quite a bit of long runs before the Syttende Mai race... But the weather was cooler and did not have that horrible humidity... So what I am going to do while I am running is ENJOY IT!!!! I am going to focus on the blessings in my life, enjoy the fact that I am doing this run in my hometown and just enjoy the run!!!!! AS ALWAYS AND FOREVER --- FORWARD!!!!!
